About Helena Zomer
The main focus of my research has been on regenerative medicine approaches to improve skin wound healing and regeneration. My training as a veterinary doctor and molecular and cell biologist gives me a singular set of skills and a unique research perspective ranging from foundational science to clinical applications. As a veterinarian scientist, I follow the One Health concept — so my research program aims to benefit both humans and animals.

Research Profile
Our mission is to advance regenerative science and medicine, spanning from foundational research to clinical applications. Grounded in the One Health principle, our work is dedicated to making meaningful contributions that benefit both humans and animals. Our current projects focus on targeting estrogen signaling and harnessing stem cell-derived therapies to enhance wound healing and promote healthy aging. Chronic wounds disproportionately affect older adults, yet existing treatments often overlook the unique biology of aged skin. Therefore, one of our works is investigating how localized modulation of estrogen signaling can rejuvenate skin repair in the elderly. In addition, we explore the regenerative potential of stem cell secretomes as a cell-free alternative for treating complex injuries such as burns, which frequently lead to fragile or scarred skin despite grafting. We are also studying 17α-estradiol, a lesser-known estrogen recently shown to extend lifespan and healthspan in mice, to better understand its mechanisms and implications for aging. Complementing our human research, we are banking mesenchymal stem cells from dogs, cats, and horses to support translational veterinary applications and expand the therapeutic reach of stem cell technologies across species.
